On Sunday, April 29, things got wild, wonderful, and downright gnarly as competitors raced down the steep slopes of Timberline Four Seasons Resort. Before you go double check to see if it’s still snowing, be advised that, yes, winter is finally over—these racers were slinging mud and catching big air on two wheels.
The West Virginia Mountain Bike Association (WVMBA) kicked off its 2018 WV Enduro Series with a wild four-stage course that was more like the love child of a downhill and enduro race than anything else. The weather was slightly cold, the trails were delightfully greasy, and the 121 riders who showed up were incredibly hardy.
For those unfamiliar to the world of mountain bike racing, an enduro race is one where riders are timed on various downhill and technical segments, and untimed on stretches between race segments, such as climbs, gravel roads, or cross-country trails. For the Timberline Enduro, riders were timed on four runs of the stage of their choosing, and untimed on the two-mile climb up the Salamander Trail to the top of the mountain.
The race was sponsored and supported by Mountain Khakis, Blackwater Bikes, Stumptown Ales, Chestnut Brew Works, Wamsley Cycles, Big Bear Lake Trail Center, Better Builders, Pocahontas Trails, and Custom Contracting.
