What is Highland Outdoors?
Highland Outdoors, published quarterly by New South Media, Inc., is the leading voice of outdoor adventure in the Appalachian Highlands. Focused on West Virginia, southwestern Pennsylvania, western Maryland, and eastern Virginia, Highland Outdoors doesn’t just report on outdoor recreation—it lives it, capturing the pulse of Appalachia’s wild places through immersive journalism, evocative photography, environmental stewardship, and profiles of the region’s most inspiring figures.
Where is Highland Outdoors based?
Highland Outdoors is based in Granville, West Virginia. The office is located at 1135 Main Street in Granville, and the mailing address is PO Box 279, Granville, WV 26534.

Subscription Questions
How do I subscribe?
You can subscribe through our subscription page. If you need help, email subscriptions@highland-outdoors.com.
When will my subscription start?
Subscriptions begin with the next published issue unless you add the current issue to your order. Because Highland Outdoors is quarterly, it may take up to three months for your first issue to arrive.
How do I renew my subscription?
You can renew through your account or by calling 304.413.0104. We also regularly send out subscription renewal notices by email and mail. If you need help accessing your account, send us an email with your name and mailing address to subscriptions@highland-outdoors.com.
Do subscriptions renew automatically?
Yes. If you purchase by credit card, your subscription will default to automatic renewal. You can opt-out at time of purchase. Near the end of each term, we’ll send a reminder before your card is charged at the current rate.
Can I turn off auto-renewal?
Yes. You can opt out anytime by logging in to your account or emailing subscriptions@highland-outdoors.com. Please include your name and mailing address with any subscription inquiries.
How do I update my mailing address?
Email subscriptions@highland-outdoors.com with your old address, your new address, and the name on the subscription.
You can also make changes to your address by accessing your account online.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes, but cancellation must be made within three business days of your order date. After that, your subscription will stay active until it expires, and no refund will be issued.
Do you offer gift subscriptions?
Yes. Gift subscriptions are a great way to share Highland Outdoors with someone who loves the mountains, trails, and wild places of Appalachia.
Can I buy a single issue or back issue?
Yes, current issues and available back issues can be purchased through our shop.
Do you offer bulk orders?
Yes. If you need several copies for an event, visitor center, business, or organization, contact us and we’ll help if we can.

Can I send a story idea?
Yes. We welcome thoughtful story ideas that fit the spirit of Highland Outdoors. If you have a strong angle on adventure, conservation, culture, or life in Appalachia, send us a brief pitch via the form on our Contributions Guidelines page.
Do you accept freelance pitches?
Yes. We consider pitches from experienced adventure and environmental writers whose work fits our editorial focus. You can reach out to us via the form on our Contributions Guidelines page.
What should I include in a pitch?
Please include a short synopsis, the planned sources, your expected word count, why you’re the right person to write it, a writing sample or links to published work, and your contact information.
What kinds of pitches are you looking for?
We’re looking for reported stories with a clear point of view, a strong Appalachian connection, and a positive or constructive tone—even when the subject is challenging.
What kinds of pitches are not a fit?
We’re usually not looking for simple personal adventure recaps unless there’s a unique angle. We also do not accept book reviews, poetry, listicles, or ideas we’ve already covered on the site in the last 10 years.
Do you accept completed manuscripts?
We prefer pitches first, rather than finished manuscripts.
Do you accept photo submissions?
Yes. We welcome photo submissions that capture adventure, environment, and culture across Appalachia. You can share your photos at any time by submitting them here.
Will I get a response to my pitch?
We do our best, but we may not be able to respond to every inquiry individually.
